CJCC JSTAT "Adult Sentencing Data" Dashboard

The District of Columbia Sentencing Commission (the Commission) routinely shares adult felony sentencing data with the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC). This data, which includes information on convicted offenses, sentence type and length, and defendant demographics, is displayed on the Justice Statistical Analysis Tool (JSAT) dashboard. JSAT is built and maintained by the CJCC and was created to provide the public with access to data regarding crime and justice system operations in the District of Columbia. It represents a collaborative effort among federal and local justice system agencies in the District.

The charts and visualizations on the JSAT dashboard were developed by the CJCC using data provided by participating agencies.

The Commission provides the CJCC with quarterly live data sourced from the District of Columbia Superior Court. The live data is continuously updated to reflect the latest court records. At the end of each calendar year, the live data is replaced with a yearly data snapshot, as reported for that given year. The data contained in the yearly snapshot has undergone rigorous cleaning and verification and aligns with the information published in the Commission’s Annual Report.

Please note the following about the data presented in the “Adult Sentencing Data” JSAT dashboards:

  • The terms and definitions in the dashboard are based on D.C. Code descriptions and do not exactly match the offense categories used by the Commission in its research and publications.
    • For example, under D.C. Code, Arson, Burglary, Murder, and Sex Abuse are classified as Violent offenses, whereas the Commission classifies Arson and Burglary as Property offenses and maintains separate categories for Murder and Sex offenses.
    • See Supplements I and II on the Commission’s website for additional information on the offense types used by the Commission.
  • The data only includes original adult felony cases sentenced in the District of Columbia Superior Court.
    • The data does not include felony sentences following a remand from the Court of Appeals, a probation revocation, the granting of an Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act or Compassionate Release motion, or other post-sentencing modifications.
    • The data does not include juvenile, federal, or misdemeanor adjudications/convictions because the D.C. Sentencing Guidelines only apply to adult felony offenses sentenced in the Criminal Division of the Superior Court.
